Healing Trauma with a Whole-Person Approach
At Budd Therapy Group], we believe that healing from trauma requires working with both the mind and body. That’s why we use top-down and bottom-up approaches to help clients process painful experiences in a way that leads to real and lasting change.
Top-Down: Healing Through the Mind
The top-down approach focuses on thoughts, emotions, and understanding to help people make sense of their
experiences and feel more in control. These methods work with the thinking part of the brain (the prefrontal cortex) to reduce stress and change negative patterns.
Some of the "top-down/mind" therapies we use include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps people recognize and change unhelpful thoughts.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Uses guided eye movements to reprocess painful memories.

Mindfulness: Teaches people how to stay in the present moment and manage emotions.

Narrative Therapy: Helps people reframe their personal stories in a more positive way.

Bottom-Up: Healing Through the Body
The bottom-up approach focuses on how trauma is stored in the body. These therapies help calm the nervous
system and release stress that can get “stuck” physically.
Some of the body-based techniques we use include:

Somatic Experiencing (SE): Helps people become aware of how trauma affects their bodies and gently
release it.

Polyvagal Therapy: Works with the nervous system to move from a state of stress to a state of safety and
relaxation.

Breathwork & Body Awareness: Uses breathing techniques and movement to help the body relax.
